William Gilmore Leake Jr., known affectionately as "Bill," led a life rich in service and dedication. Born on September 20, 1941, in Charlottesville, Va., he was the son of William Gilmore Leake and Virginia Mae Shifflett. On May 10, 2024, Bill peacefully embarked on his journey to his heavenly home, joining his loved ones who had gone before him, including his former wife, Betty Leake, his sister Joyce Fisher, and his life partner, Mary Clatterbuck.
Bill's life was marked by diverse achievements and roles. He served his country with honor as a Veteran of the U.S. Navy. His commitment to upholding the law and ensuring the safety of others was exemplified through his distinguished career in law enforcement, where he notably served as a K9 Handler. Alongside these professional accomplishments, Bill showcased his craftsmanship as a skilled carpenter.
Those who were fortunate enough to know Bill will fondly remember him for his warmth, his dedication, and his unwavering love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy cherished by his children: Jeffrey Leake (Gayle), Barry Leake (Pam), and Cheryl Kirby (Gene). He was a beloved brother to Judy Nicely (Gordon), Meredith Leake (Linda), and Stanley Leake (Linda). His grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart, affectionately referred to as "his babies." Bill's memory will also be treasured by his nieces, nephews, friends, and caretakers.
In accordance with Bill's wishes, there will be no formal service to mourn his passing. Instead, his loved ones will honor his memory through the enduring impact he had on their lives and the legacy of kindness and service he leaves behind.
