It is with heavy hearts that we share the unexpected passing of Teresa Burks Wimmer. Teresa passed away on March 19th, 2025, at the University of Virginia Medical Center surrounded by family and friends.
Born on December 9th, 1956, the daughter of the late Josiah and Mildred Burks of Charlottesville and sister to the late Kenny Burks of Brownsburg. Teresa grew up with a passion for hard work and perseverance. She began her professional career at GE Fanuc in 1977 within the computer department, beginning her passion for computers, information systems and much more. In January 2001, Teresa began her journey at UVA. Teresa led the University through transformational application implementation with far-reaching impact, notably around the adoption and usage of applications such as Oracle, PeopleSoft, and Workday. She started as a key member of the Oracle Financials implementation team. Her dedication and expertise led her to stay on and implement Oracle HR in September 2002, followed by the PeopleSoft Student System in 2008. In October 2011, Teresa took on the role of Assistant Vice President for Enterprise Applications, where she led the successful implementation of Workday HCM. Her contributions to the project led her to win the coveted Sandridge Outstanding Contributor award in 2019 - a true accomplishment. Throughout her career, Teresa had a tremendous impact on the University, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and excellence. Teresa retired from UVA on September 22nd, 2024.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Donald Wimmer, her son, Kris Wimmer (Leah) and grandson, Beckett of Ruckersville; sister-in-law, Pam Burks; a nephew, Jordan Burks (girlfriend Bailee); a special aunt, Dorothy Peregoy; and countless friends who were touched by her kindness, love, and support.
She embraced life with enthusiasm and poured a tremendous amount of love into everything she did. Teresa was an avid UVA fan, runner, and enjoyed traveling with her husband and close friends.
Above all, she was a devoted mother, daughter, sister, mother-in-law, niece, aunt, and friend, whose greatest pride was her family. Recently, she experienced the incredible joy of becoming a grandmother, a role she embraced wholeheartedly. Her love and wisdom will continue to guide us and her memory will forever remain in our hearts.
