Mary Elizabeth Shifflett, age 69, of Free Union, died in a tragic fire at her home along Simmons Gap Road, December 12, 2015, along with her husband of 51 years, Harven Shifflett. She was born October 17, 1946, and was the adopted daughter of the late Ben D. and Mary Yoder of Stuarts Draft.
She is survived by her sisters, Lovina, wife of Ernest Yoder of Rustburg, Fannie Mae Yoder of Stuarts Draft, Magdalena, wife of Alvin M. Schrock of Cumberland, and Beda Robertson Mattox of Waynesboro; and three brothers, Sanford, husband of Martha Yoder of Costa Rica, Eli, husband of Ruth Yoder of Floyd, and Harvey, husband of Alma Jean Wert, of Harrisonburg.
She married Harven Isaac Shifflett of Free Union on November 19, 1964, and they leave behind one son, Harlen Christopher Shifflett of Tacoma, Washington, two grandchildren, Michael Daniel and Brittany Nicole Shifflett; a special unnamed caregiver and friend and 14 nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sisters, Esther, wife of the late Robert Yoder of Gladys, Lucy, wife of Alvin S. Schrock of Stuarts Draft; two brothers, Roger Lee Robertson and John Wayne Robertson; her biological parents, John Clinton Hite and Lorraine Robertson; and their dog, Rocky who was also lost in the fire.
She was a professional cleaner and a good friend to many in her community, and enjoyed bingo, going on bus trips and finding bargains at yard sales, which she often shared with others. Gift giving and arranging for family get togethers always brought her great joy.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Sunday, January 3, 2016 at the Dyke Volunteer Fire Department, 9144 Dyke Road, Dyke, Virginia 22935. A private graveside will be held at a later date.
