Mary Sohmer Laird

October 18, 1929 — February 28, 2025

Charlottesville

Mary Sohmer Laird, originally of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 28th. Mary was born on October 18, 1929, and lived most of her life in Media, Pennsylvania, except for the last five years when she traveled to Charlottesville, Virginia, to reside with her daughter, Joan.

Mary had a big personality, was the life of the party, and positively impacted everyone she met. She spent many years raising her four daughters, regularly transporting them to sports events. She was a dedicated mom, always involved in community and school events, and continued this level of dedication with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church. She was a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan and was thrilled to see her beloved Eagles win their second Super Bowl.

Mary was married for 36 years to her loving husband, John N. Laird, Jr., who preceded her in death in 1993. She is survived by her four daughters, Peggy Blythe (Bob), Jean Donnelly (Ed), Joan Laird, and Sue Laird. Mom-Mom will be missed by her three grandchildren, Zachary Laird (Emlen), Erica Altizer (Cody), and Eddie Donnely, as well as her four great-grandchildren Case Altizer, Emma Altizer, Ellison Laird, and Bennett Laird. Mary is also survived by her six brothers and sisters, Edwina Curtis (Wayne), Jane Spangler, Edward (Buzz) Sohmer (Maureen), Rose Doneker (Harry), Joe Sohmer, Celie Lendh (George), and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A private burial is being held in Media, Pennsylvania. To celebrate Mary’s life, please raise a glass and toast to the health and happiness of your loved ones. Cheers Together!

Arrangements are entrusted to Batten Funeral Home of Ruckersville, Virginia.
