Kathryn Benzinger passed away Saturday March 12, 2016 at her residence. She was born on December 9, 1916 in Arlington, VA to the late Thomas and Elsie Graham. She succumbed to a short-term case of old age. Despite opinions of those who knew her she was 99 years old.
Mrs. Benzinger is survived by her 7 children, Tom Benzinger and his wife Kim of San Diego, CA, John Benzinger of Germantown, New York, Paul Benzinger and his wife Sandra of Ruckersville, Jim Benzinger and his wife Charlotte of Charlottesville, Bill Benzinger and his wife Therese of Gordonsville, Doug Benzinger and his wife Valerie of Roanoke and Alice of Ruckersville; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Matthias Benzinger and her daughter, Ann Marie Benzinger.
Mrs. Benzinger was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church. She and her late husband owned and operated Benzinger Greenhouses. As a charter member of the Greene County Rescue Squad, Kathryn taught numerous CPR and First Aid classes to the community. She was also a volunteer with Hospice of the Piedmont. Fred and Kathryn were some of the first members of Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church in Quinque. Kathryn had a lifelong passion for gardening beginning as a young child helping her mother Elsie, in her flowerbeds. She began painting late in her life, after claiming she couldn’t draw a straight line. Her favorite subjects to draw and paint were birds and flowers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday April 1, 2016 at 1 p.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church with Father Dan Bain officiating.
Interment will be in Culpeper National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greene County Rescue Squad, PO Box 302 Stanardsville, VA 22973 and/or Hospice of the Piedmont at 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway Suite 300 Charlottesville, VA 22911.
