Marie S. Layton, 87, of Stanardsville, VA died on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Martha Jefferson Hospital. She was born on October 15, 1923 in Greene Co. to the late Asberry and Bessie Breeden Shiflett.
Mrs. Layton was a member of Mt. Olivet Christian Church. She enjoyed working in her yard but most of all she loved spoiling all the children she babysat for who affectionately called her “Granny Ree”.
She is survived by her three children, Patricia Harlowe and her husband, James of Troy, Phyllis Knight of Stanardsville and W.H. Layton and his wife, Donna of Stanardsville.
Additional survivors include her sister, Helen Mitchell of Stanardsville, four grandchildren, Kimberly Harlowe, Brandon Knight, Bill Layton and Deedra Roach and four great grandchildren, Keira Roach, Kalani Roach, Kingston Roach and Will Layton.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Layton and three siblings, Ruby Shiflett, Frances Collier and Lloyd Shiflett.
A private graveside service will be held at Mt. Olivet Church Cemetery with Rev. C.C. Kurtz officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Greene County Rescue Squad P.O. Box 302 Stanardsville, VA 22973.
