Margaret Imogene Barnett
Margaret Imogene Barnett, 93, of Stanardsville, VA passed away on December 31, 2012. Born in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late Charlotte and Otto Johnson. Imogene, or as she was better known to her family and friends as “Jimi”, grew up in Washington, DC enjoying the many sights and sounds that our Nation’s Capital has to offer. Along with her sister, Gloria, and brother, Jack, they spent their childhood summers in their mother’s hometown of Concord, NC. Here they enjoyed the simple pleasures only a rural southern town can offer.
Jimi worked as adjutant with the Department of Defense retiring in 1968. During her years with the Government, she became active in the Civil Air Patrol in which she flew coast helping to protect our nation’s freedom.
Jimi married in January of 1964 to the love of her life, Jack Barnett. Jack served in the U. S. Marine Corps as a Medic earning medals for his valor in service. Over the years, the couple lived in the suburbs of Washington, DC before moving to Greene County, which they both loved dearly. Although the couple had no children, their love for their pets, as well as their caring and generosity to local community children, was well noted. One of Jimi’s proudest achievements was being actively involved in the development of Evergreene Village. She was one of the first to volunteer obtaining signatures for the community’s development as well as purchasing one of the first cottages built. Jimi was a member of Stanardsville United Methodist Church where she valued the friendship of the congregation and grew her faith in God.
Jimi was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, and her brother, Colonel Jack Johnson, USAF Retired. Jimi is survived by her sister, Gloria Hedrick-Johnson of Alexandria, VA; nephew, Brian Hedrick of Kitty Hawk, NC; nieces, Gigi Jones of Tyler, TX and Sandra Hedrick of Long Beach, MS. Jimi considered many of her neighbors as close friends with her neighbor, Joan Titus, being her dearest friend.
Jimi will be missed by her family, friends, and all those she touched. Her spirit will always be with us! The family would like to thank the staff at Grace Health & Rehab Center as well as her caregivers, Connie Carter and Sandra Davis, for making Jimi’s final days as comfortable as possible.
A funeral service will be Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Chuck Winner officiating at Stanardsville United Methodist Church. Burial will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery where Jimi will be interred next to her husband, Jack.
