Mamie Gilbert Runkle
Mamie Maude Gilbert Runkle, 99, of Stanardsville, VA, died Friday, January 25, 2013, at The Laurels, Charlottesville, VA, of complications following an injury in December 2012.
Mamie was born September 2, 1913, at Heards, VA. The following year, the family moved to their farm at Ruckersville, VA. Her parents were Benjamin W. Gilbert and Willie Dulaney Gilbert. She was predeceased by her parents and seven siblings.
Her husband, Thomas Price Runkle, died February 14, 1963.
Mamie graduated from William Monroe High School and Jefferson Professional Institute. She retired in 1983 from her secretarial position with the Virginia Extension Service office in Stanardsville. She was active in many civic clubs earlier in life. During her retirement, she enjoyed traveling to various parts of the United States and the Caribbean.
She was the oldest member of South River United Methodist Church which she began attending following her marriage in 1938.
She is survived by her two sons and their families: Marty Thomas Runkle, and wife, Corinne Quigley Runkle, of Madison, AL, and their children, Bryan Thomas Runkle, wife, Beth, and children, Brody and Grace, of Middletown, RI, Dana Runkle Marder, and children, Ashley Moore, Powell, Amelia, and Presley Marder, of Tallahassee, FL, Sara Runkle Nichols, husband, Steve, and children, Mackenzie and Riley, of Tampa, FL, Shanna Sharpe Davis, husband, Greg, and children, Abbie and Colin, of Tallahassee, FL, and Jamie Sharpe, of Hendersonville, NC; and Robert Edward Runkle, and wife, Janet Henshaw Runkle, and children, Amy Runkle Weakley, husband, Kevin, and daughter, Addie, and Katherine A. (Kati) Runkle, all of Stanardsville.
She is survived by her brother, William T. Gilbert, of Charlottesville; and also, her sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert N. (Gerri) Gilbert, of Ruckersville.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 pm, Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at Ryan Funeral Home, 12819 Spotswood Trail, Ruckersville, Virginia.
A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, January 31, 2012, at 11 am, at Ryan Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Stanardsville Cemetery.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff who cared for “Granny” at the Martha Jefferson Hospital and at The Laurels, and to those who visited her and sent cards during her confinement.
