Macie Virginia Hammer Fleisher

On July 9, 2024, Macie Virginia Hammer Fleisher passed away with her daughter Deborah by her side. 

Macie was born in West Virginia to the late John Hammer and Mattie Whitecotton Hammer on December 6, 1928. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Leon Fleisher, and sisters, Ruth Smith, Mary Kuykendall and Ruby Heatwole. 

Macie is survived by her daughters Kathy Bushfield and Deborah Sheffey (Charles), grandchildren Robert Bushfield (Katie), Rachel Mitchell (Adam), Natalie Soto (Edwin), Allison Sheffey, and sister Bonnie May as well as many nieces and nephews.

Macie grew up in a household with her sisters Ruth, Mary, Ruby, and Bonnie in the mountains of West Virginia. She graduated from Franklin High School in Franklin, West Virginia and married Leon Fleisher in 1950. As newlyweds, they lived in Staunton, Virginia. When Leon enlisted in the Marine Corp, they moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina and then settled in Ruckersville, Virginia. 

Gardening, watching basketball, reading, and embroidery work were her favorite pastimes. Having her daughters and their families visit was true joy for her. The best recipes and favorite dishes were always waiting. She served as treasurer of the Ruckersville Fire Department Auxiliary and served as treasurer of the New Life Baptist Church. She was a faithful church member, and her life involved much service to others.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at 10:00am at Batten Funeral Home, Ruckersville, Virginia. Reverend Stephen Mathis will be the officiant.
