Lucy Patteson Cyrus

Lucy Patteson Cyrus of Ruckersville, Virginia, passed away on February 7, 2025. She left this world peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family. Lucy was born on November 13, 1933, to her parents, William and Edna Patteson, in Appomattox County. 

There, she was raised on a farm where she nurtured her lifelong love of gardening and the outdoors. Being the seventh child of eight siblings, she quickly learned to be resilient, independent, and adaptable. Even though Lucy was tough, you could always find her making jokes and laughing. She found joy in life's small moments and loved everyone around her unconditionally. These attributes served her well and helped build her into the amazing woman she was. As an adult, she became the mother of four children: Nathan Markland, Carol (Juan ) Valenzuela, Kenneth (Tonya) Cyrus, and Mellisa (Russell) Adkins. While raising her children, Lucy worked for Sprint phone services for many years until she retired in 1995.

After retirement, she enjoyed helping care for her grandchildren: Ashley (Ian) Trainum, Sarah (Tyler ) Shifflett, Rachel (Austin) Robbins, Mary (Brant) Adkins, William "James," Allena, and Dustin Valenzuela. Later, I was blessed with 14 great-grandchildren- Abigail and Isobel Trainum, Elizabeth, Hallie, Isaac and Ethan Shifflett, Nevaeh, Danika, Lucy and Hevenleigh, Walker Robbins, Mason Delp, Nova Crist, and Ivylynn Adkins. As well as one great-great-grandchild, Malaki Robbins. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, William Diuguid and Edna Viola Patteson, and her siblings, Robert, William, Betty, Charles, Barbra, Thomas, and Edd Patteson. 

The family would like to thank the members of Medi Hospice for the care and support they provided to Lucy. 

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 13, from 10:30 to 11:30 at Batten Funeral Home. A service will immediately follow, beginning at 11:30. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.
