It is with an immensely heavy heart that we announce the passing of Kristen Lang Hoberg. Born on January 19, 1987, in Alexandria, Virginia, Kristen passed away on January 31, 2025, in Charlottesville, Virginia, after a sudden, quick battle with a stroke. She spent her final days surrounded by countless loved ones. Kristen was preceded in death by her father, Scot. She is survived by her husband, John, children Everett and Eloise, mother Jo Ann, sister Erin, her large extended family, and no less than 20 women who were all equally surprised to hear that Kristen had other “best” friends. “How can she be your best friend, she’s my best friend?” was overheard more than once in the hospital. This surprised her husband and sister, who both thought they were Kristen’s best friend.
Kristen’s childhood, much like her adult life, was filled with family & friends. Many of her favorite early memories were of time spent with both sides of her family. She was a fun, vibrant, perhaps feisty, at times, child and teenager who brought laughter to every room she was in.
Kristen was an accomplished accountant who surprised no one when she passed each of her CPA exams on the first attempt. That said, she was much more than a working professional. Her greatest joy was seeing her kids happy and succeeding. Whether snuggling on the couch with a movie night, attending soccer games, or watching a ballet “recital,” the smile on her face was all you needed to see to define true love.
She had just begun to explore a love of traveling. A week in Italy sipping wine, eating like royalty, and visiting breathtaking locations was truly a highlight. Spending Christmas and New Year's in France with her husband and their children provided memories that will never be forgotten.
Having experienced loss at a young age, Kristen truly understood both the fragility of life and the importance of connection with others. She poured her heart into building and maintaining relationships. She was often first on the “yes” list for family functions and routinely made difficult concessions to make sure she’d be able to share important moments with people she loved. The effort she put into these relationships was a direct reflection of her values.
Kristen’s many strong friendships were a central part of her life. The simple pleasure of laughing and telling stories surrounded by friends, with a glass of wine, Twisted Tea in hand, and kids running around like mad was her definition of a perfect Saturday.
A celebration of her extraordinary life will be held at Afton Mountain Vineyards on Saturday, February 8th, at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to www.breakthrought1d.org in her honor.
