Joseph “Joe” Richard Greenwood, 85, of Barboursville passed away Saturday, January 25, 2020.
He was born August 14, 1934 in Durham, NC, son of the late Joe and Neva Greenwood.
Joe is survived by his wife, Mary, after 62 years of wonderful marriage; son, Joseph Michael Greenwood and his daughters, Belinda and Ann; six amazing grandchildren, Joseph, Jonathan, Jenny, Christopher, Cole and Nick; two beautiful great granddaughters, Ava and Julia.
Joe graduated from Falls Church High School in 1952, attended Duke University, served in the U.S. Army Band at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD, and graduated from Capitol Radio Engineering Institute in 1960.
He joined Honeywell Data Processing in 1960 and held various engineering and management positions in several locations with the U.S. Joe joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1975 as a Mission Operations Engineer. He was a member of the Viking and Voyager spacecraft teams and was Ground Operations Engineer for the Galileo mission. Joe retired in 1989 after performing contractual support for the Army Intelligence and Electronic Warfare group in Vint Hill, VA.
Travel with his wife, Mary, was a major part of his life. His work took them around the United States and retirement allowed them to travel the world.
Joe was an amateur musician, playing trombone for civic orchestras, theater orchestras and church groups.
He was a member of the Warrenton Elks Lodge, Warrenton AARP, Northumberland Lions Club and Greene County Lions Club.
Joe was active in the Boy Scouts of California. His troop earned special awards for its depth of activities ranging from high altitude Sierra hiking to Colorado River canoeing. A highpoint of this service was watching his son earn the rank of Eagle Scout.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Stanardsville United Methodist Church, 25 Court Street Stanardsville, VA with Pastor Chuck Winner officiating.
