John L. Schrader, affectionately known as “Aviator 47,” soared into the heavens for his final flight on Monday, April 15, 2024, at the age of 78, surrounded by his adoring family. Born on January 24, 1946, in Picayune, Mississippi, to the late William Schrader and Ouida Stockhill, John leaves behind a legacy that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Ricky Schrader of Levittown, PA; his beloved grandson, Brian Schrader of Charlotte, NC; and his brother-in-law, Jack Vogel of Dunedin, Florida.
Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 37 years, Barbara Hale Schrader; his daughters, Jenny Lynne Schrader and Amandalyn Schrader Klemptner (Jeremy) of Ruckersville; his son, John Schrader (Mandy) of Langhorne, PA; his grandson, Travis Nagorski, of Charlotte, NC; his sisters, Sheila Vogel and Lisa Conca (Chris), both of Dunedin, FL; his niece, Kerry Conca of Dunedin, FL; his nephews, Cameron Conca and Brin Vogel (Melissa), both of Dunedin, FL; his cherished friends and Vietnam flight comrades, Roger Walker (Joyce) of Yorktown, VA, and Steve Smith (Patty) of Knoxville, TN; and, of course, his UVA Pegasus family of pilots, care providers, mechanics, and Med-Com.
John proudly served his nation in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, demonstrating unparalleled courage and dedication. Rising to the rank of Captain, he piloted AH1G Cobra helicopters, bravely defending his country. John's commitment to service and valor was evident in every mission he undertook. His bravery ensured the safety of his crew and earned him numerous commendations, including the prestigious Silver Star. Even after his honorable discharge, John's passion for flight persisted, as he continued to serve his community as a helicopter pilot for UVA Pegasus in the early 90s. After two decades of dedicated service, John retired due to declining health. Throughout his nearly five decades of flying, John's unwavering bravery, loyalty, and compassionate spirit touched the lives of many.
A celebration of John's remarkable life will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024, commencing at 1:00 p.m. at Batten Funeral Home, located at 12819 Spotswood Trail, Ruckersville, Virginia, 22968.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made in John’s honor to the Gary Sinise Foundation, a cause that held a special place in his heart.
