Irene M. Shifflett
Irene M. Shifflett, 75, of Orange County and previously of Rockville, Maryland went to be with her Lord on October 2, 2014 in the comfort of her home as a result of vascular dementia and its complications.
Irene was born on October 11, 1938 in Charlottesville, Virginia. She was the youngest daughter of the late Berman and Nettie Morris. Tragically her mother died when she was only five weeks old and she was raised by her aunt Fannie “Frankie” Morris in Dyke, Virginia.
Irene is also preceded in death by her brothers, Wilmer “Bill” Morris, Everett Morris, Wilbert Morris, Leo Morris, who died as an infant; her sisters, Lois Collins, Dorothy Dunn, Geraldine Owens, Shirley Currier and Lettie Knight.
She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Walter Shifflett, Sr. of Orange County, Virginia; five children, Wanda Shifflett of Ruckersville, Pamela Frazier and her husband, Chuck of Damascus, Maryland, Walter Shifflett, Jr. and his wife, Lily of Laytonsville, Maryland, Tammy Frost and her husband, Tommy of Damascus, Maryland, Porter Shifflett and his wife, Shannon of Clarksburg, Maryland. Irene also leaves behind her 14 cherished grandchildren, Dwayne and Michael Britton whom she raised as her own and Dwayne’s wife, Renae, Lisa and Robert Kolpack, Amanda Frazier, James, Patrick, Steven and Nicholas Shifflett, Sarah and Chase Frost, Corinne, Caroline and Sophia Shifflett; five great grandchildren, Kayla, Drew and Tyler Britton, Cheyenne Wright and Easton Simms; two brothers, Roger Shifflett and his wife, Carolyn and Charles Morris for whom she cared for 32 years; two sisters, Eleanor “Sis” Breeden and Brenda Morris.
Irene was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Madison, Virginia. She will be sorely missed by her loving family as well as her church family.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 5, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ryan Funeral Home, 12819 Spotswood Trail Ruckersville, VA 22968.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 6, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Ryan Funeral Home with Pastor Dale Freeman officiating.
Interment will follow at the family cemetery on Wyatt Mountain.
The family would like to thank Irene’s caregivers, Betty Williams, Tina Quinn and special caregivers, Lisa Kolpack, Hannah Allen and at the end of her life, Hospice of the Piedmont.
