Frederick Matthias Benzinger, 88, of Ruckersville, died on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at Martha Jefferson Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born on October 8, 1922 in Baltimore, MD to the late, Aloysius and Maude Gay Benzinger.
Mr. Benzinger was a veteran of the United States Army and served his country in WWII. He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His hobby was his work where he owned and operated Benzinger Greenhouses. His dedication and compassion for the nursery was constant over the years and he continued research throughout his life. Above all, his love for family and friends will always be deeply remembered.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Kathryn Benzinger, 8 children, Thomas Benzinger of San Diego, CA, John Benzinger and his wife, Omkari of NY, Paul Benzinger and his wife, Sandy of Ruckersville, Ann Benzinger of Wolftown, James Benzinger and his wife, Charlotte of Charlottesville, William Benzinger and his wife, Therese of Gordonsville, Doug Benzinger and his wife, Valerie of Roanoke and Alice Hockaday of Richmond, 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 1 sister.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church with Father Dan Bain officiating.
Interment will be in Culpeper National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Pkwy, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
