Eleanor Marguerite Santic
Eleanor Marguerite Santic, 86, of Barboursville, VA, died suddenly on Friday, June 8, 2012, at her residence.
Born on April 15, 1926, in Queens, NY, she was the daughter of Edward and Eleanor (Kuhlmey) Fritz. She was a 1944 graduate of Hunter College High School and a 1948 graduate of Hunter College, in New York City. On February 17, 1951, Eleanor married John A. Santic, a photoengraver for the New York Times. They lived first in Bayside, Queens, where her son, John Scott, and daughter, Karen Eleanor, were born. The family then lived for many years in Cresskill, NJ. During this time, Eleanor had a first career as a public school teacher in River Vale, NJ. In 1986, she received the Governor's Award for Outstanding Teaching from the Governor of New Jersey.
After retiring and the death of her husband, she moved to Barboursville, VA, in 1988. Eleanor was an adventurous and frequent traveler, both internationally and regionally. Her favorite destinations were Australia and the United Kingdom, and she visited both locations numerous times. Due to her love of travel, she began a second career managing her own travel agency, Downunder & UK Travel. In 1994, she received the Opal Award from the Australia Tourist Commission for her travel expertise and newsletter. Eleanor also was an accomplished pianist and an avid stamp collector.
She was preceded in death by her husband and daughter, her brother Carl E. Fritz, Sr., her sister Mildred V. Fritz, and her parents. She is survived by her son, John S. Santic of Solomons, MD, her sister Carol S. Steinmetz of East Moriches, NY, her brother Edward A. Fritz of Fincastle, VA, her sister-in-law Antoinette M. Fritz of Hicksville, NY, plus nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 14, 2012, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ryan Funeral Home, 12819 Spotswood Trail, Ruckersville, VA 22968.
