Elbert Richard Shifflett, 83, of Dyke, VA passed away peacefully on Monday, July 4, 2016 at his residence. He was born on September 10, 1932 in Simmons Gap to the late Charles Luke Shifflett and Bertha Morris Deane.
Elbert was a people person who never met a stranger and enjoyed helping in multiple ways. He drove tractor trailers for years and sold Christmas trees for a while to earn money to start his car business. He worked in car sales for 20 years in Northern Virginia and he came home to Greene County to retire but after 3 weeks he decided retirement wasn’t for him. He loved old cars and put his antique cars in multiple parades for many years. He drove lots of people in the Dogwood, Stanardsville, Elkton, Orange and Crozet parades.
He was a member of the Moose and loved to dance, listen to bluegrass music at festivals and concerts and watch NASCAR. Above all Elbert loved his family and visited his mother and brother daily at Grace Nursing Home for years until they passed and made multiple friends there.
He is survived by his wife, Charlene Mahoney Shifflett; his children, Elaine Whetzel and her husband, David Cobb, Ronald Shifflett, Donna Roach and her husband, Donnie, and Karen Hammack and her husband, Gary; grandchildren, Jeff Whetzel, Michael Roach and his wife, Leah and Katelyn Roach; and great grandchild, Jaron Whetzel.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his siblings, Wilmer Shifflett, Elmer Owen Shifflett, his twin brother Elvin Roy Shifflett and Charles Luke Morris.
Elbert was also raised and loved by his extended family, the late Fannie “Frankie” Morris, the late Tom and Lettie Knight and their entire families who he continued to love and cherish.
