Doris Ellen Self McDaniel slipped away peacefully at her home in Stanardsville on Sunday, March 18, 2012. She was born on May 15, 1929 in the Brushy Run area of Pendleton County, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Alvin and Emma Alt Self.
Her husband of 64 years, William Emory McDaniel, passed away in January of 2011. Also preceding her in death were her six brothers, Pinkney, Orville, Johnny, Ralph, Paul and Delmar Self.
She is survived by her two sisters, Eva Ailer of Verona and Ruth Fulk of Harrisonburg, her daughter, Marie Deane and her companion, Lewis Woodson of North Garden and her son William Alvin McDaniel of Scottsville. Doris retired from Stromberg Carlson after working there 36 years. In her retirement she enjoyed spending time outdoors where she could enjoy her flowers and birds. In the evening she kept busy designing quilts and trying to keep up with the sewing and alteration work she took in and from time to time would plan short trips for a little fun.
When we think of Granny we’ll always remember the many wonderful meals she so loving prepared, the fun times shared and her love of strawberry ice cream.
