Charles Witmer Shank
Charles Witmer Shank of Stanardsville, VA died peacefully at home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the age of 86. He has been in failing health for the past several months due to a bout of lymphoma.
He was born on November 23, 1924 in Rockingham County to the late Samuel A. (twin to Emanuel) and Ada Witmer Shank. He is survived by a brother, Glendon (Mildred) Shank of Ocala, FL and two sisters, Ruby (the late Mervin) Sutter of Sarasota, FL and Rhoda (Herman) Thompson of Harrisonburg, VA. He is preceded in death by a sister, Roxie Yoder of Scottsdale, PA.
He is also survived by his wife, Velma Good (Effie Mae) of 62 years. They were married on June 22, 1949. There are 3 children, Eileen (Orlin) Campbell of Linville, VA, Allen of Ruckersville, VA and Janice (Bruce) Morton of Stanardsville, VA. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Todd (April) of Elkton, VA, Derrick (Amy) of Shenandoah, VA, Scott (Thea) and Meredith Campbell of Linville, VA, Sheena, Sara, and Samantha Morton of Stanardsville. There are 4 great grandchildren, Sadie, Elijah, Emma, and Adelaide Campbell.
Charles spent most of his life serving the Lord. He served as Sunday School superintendent and song leader of Gospel Hill and Zion Hill Mennonite Church in the late 1940’s and early 50’s before being called to serve in Greene County at Temple Hill in 1955. Then in 1960, he and his wife were asked to help at Mount Hermon Mennonite Church (Mutton Hollow). He was an active member there until his death. One of his greatest joys was in sharing the Word of God with the residents of Evergreene Nursing Home and Evergreene Meadows. He often presided over resident’s funerals. He loved to sing and we will always picture him faithfully reading and studying his Bible. He will be remembered as a diligent conscientious prayer warrior for his family and of anyone else whom he was concerned.
He established himself as one of the county’s plumbers in 1956 when the family moved to Greene County. He was manager of Greene County Water Supply and Sewer Works from the late 1950’s to mid- 1970’s. He also built the first laundromat in Stanardsville and maintained it until the late 1970’s when he sold the building. He loved his work and retired in 2005 at the age of 80.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ryan Funeral Home, 12819 Spotswood Trail Ruckersville, VA 22968
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 11 a.m. at First Bible Baptist Church, 335 Crusaders Ct, Ruckersville, VA 22968.
Interment will follow in Mt. Hermon Mennonite Church Cemetery.
