Bessie Irene Herring Powell
Kinston-Bessie Irene Herring Powell slipped away quietly to be with the Lord on June 6, 2012 at Harmony Hall Nursing Home in Kinston NC with her family by her side. She was 91 years old and a three time cancer survivor. Bessie was predeceased by her husband, Everette Luvern Powell, who died in 1948 of an accidental drowning three weeks before the birth of their second daughter. In addition, Bessie was predeceased in 1994 by Haywood Powell, her special companion, and her parents, Andrew and Viola Herring. She was also predeceased by two older sisters, Arbutus Long and Mary Frances (Carrie) Marshall and one older brother, George Herring.
Bessie is survived by her two devoted daughters, Joan Annie Graves (husband Bill) of Washington, DC and Evelyn Luverne Deane (husband Ray) of Kinston, NC. In addition she leaves two grandsons who were her pride and joy-Christopher Haywood Deane of Raleigh, NC and Jason Clark Deane of Durham, NC. She is also survived by a niece,
Rebecca Marshall of Ruckersville, VA. Bessie moved from her home in Ruckersville, VA to Harmony Hall Rehab Center in Kinston, NC after suffering a fall in October, 2009. Special thanks go out to the staff members who loved and cared for her over the past 2 ¾ years and to Debbie Wiley, Ascerta Care Hospice nurse and her fellow workers.
Bessie was able to live in Ruckersville through the elderly years because of the special assistance of extended family and friends. Special thanks and appreciation go out to Joyce and Roland Pittman; Gayle and Tommy Edwards; Janice Morris and her children (Rhonda, Julie and Brian); Dottie Scott of JABA; the Greene County Health Department; the Greene County Transit Authority; and Region X.
Bessie was talented in many ways: she crocheted beautiful bedspreads and was a talented seamstress. She was a master gardener and a gourmet cook. She loved animals of all kinds, from ground hogs to deer, with a special love for cats and dogs, especially black labs.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Ruckersville Baptist Church in Ruckersville, VA. followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville, VA.
