Amber Elizabeth Lanter of Barboursville, Virginia was born on July 5, 1974 and died in her sleep on July 9, 2022. She is survived by her cherished son, Jacob Ashby Tomlin, her mother and father, Ilene Robinson and Ronald Robinson, her sister, Nikki Brookman, her nieces and nephew, Maggie, Lilly, and Bennett, cousins, very dear friends, and countless patients and colleagues who all loved her immensely. She had a shine about her that took your breath away and a laugh that brought immediate joy to any crowd. Her warmth invited confidence, and her heart gladly welcomed authentic connection. Amber worked tirelessly throughout her life to improve the lives of those around her.
Amber attended the University of Virginia School of Nursing and graduated in 1996. She became a Certified Nephrology Nurse and worked as a well-respected member of the nephrology nursing community at the University of Virginia for most of her remarkable career. She served her patients and their families while supporting and mentoring her colleagues with compassion and determination. Amber was forever humbled by the praise and respect she earned in her career from her patients and colleagues. She knew she was going to be a nurse from the time she was in the first grade. Amber loved nursing.
As a mother, Amber was a warrior, determined to offer her son dependable support, the best opportunities, and the surest pathways to happiness. She was as constant as the sunrise for every step of his life. She lathered up in spf 70, donned a practical hat, and cheered for her boy and his team, every single time she had the chance. She kept her freezer stocked with Totino's pizza rolls and ice cream for years and was honored to welcome Jacob’s crew as family. She loved every minute of it. Seeing him happy was her first priority. Watching him walk across the stage to receive his degrees at Ferrum College graduation was likely the proudest moment of her life.
Amber was the best sister in the world, the most supportive and loyal friend, a trusted advisor, an honest and open listener, and a wicked seeker of truth. She yearned for peace, acceptance, inclusion, and more love. It might be said she was magic.
We will be holding an informal celebration at the Stanardsville Fire Department on Sunday, July 17, 2022 from 4 to 8 p.m. Please come prepared to add a song to Amber's playlist, share a story that she brings to mind, and creatively honor this beautiful person. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending donations to The Women’s Initiative.
